Dental Bridges in Westlake Replace a Missing Tooth Permanently

A missing tooth is not just a cosmetic problem. It affects how you chew, how your remaining teeth align, and over time, the shape of your jaw. A custom dental bridge restores the full function and appearance of your smile without surgery.

A missing tooth causes more damage than most people realise.

The moment a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth begin to respond. The teeth on either side of the gap slowly tilt inward to fill the space. The tooth above or below the gap over-erupts downward or upward because it no longer has an opposing tooth to bite against.

Over time, this shifting changes your bite. An uneven bite puts uneven pressure on your jaw joints, which can lead to jaw pain, headaches, and accelerated wear on the teeth that are left.

Below the gum line, the bone that used to support the missing tooth begins to resorb. Without the stimulation of a tooth root, the jaw bone in that area gradually shrinks, changing the shape of your face and making future tooth replacement more complex.

The longer a gap is left untreated, the more damage accumulates and the more expensive the solution becomes.

A fixed, non-removable solution that looks and functions like a natural tooth.

A dental bridge is a permanent, non-removable tooth replacement that spans the gap left by a missing tooth. It uses the healthy teeth on either side of the gap as anchors, with a lifelike replacement tooth suspended between them.

Unlike a removable partial denture, a bridge is cemented in place. You eat with it, clean it, and forget it is there. It restores your ability to chew properly on both sides of your mouth and stops the surrounding teeth from shifting.

At Westlake Dental, every bridge is custom-crafted using high-strength porcelain materials that match the exact colour, shape, and translucency of your natural teeth. Dr Gilbert's Kois Centre training in bite biomechanics ensures the bridge is designed to handle the real forces of chewing, not just to look good in the mirror.

When is a dental bridge the right choice?

A dental bridge is a strong option when:

You are missing one or two adjacent teeth and the teeth on either side are healthy and strong enough to serve as anchors.

You want a fixed, non-removable solution without the surgical component of a dental implant.

You have had a tooth extracted recently and want to restore the gap before the surrounding teeth begin to shift.

You are not a suitable candidate for implants due to insufficient bone density or medical factors that make surgery inadvisable.

You want a faster solution than an implant, which requires a healing period of several months between the implant placement and the final crown.

A bridge is not the right choice if the anchor teeth are heavily decayed, weakened, or already crowned in a way that would compromise their ability to support the bridge. Dr Gilbert will assess the health of the anchor teeth at your consultation and advise you honestly on whether a bridge or an implant is the better long-term investment for your specific situation.

What to expect when getting a dental bridge.

    Visit 1: Preparation

The two anchor teeth on either side of the gap are gently shaped to create room for the bridge crowns that will sit over them. A precise impression is taken of the prepared teeth and the gap. You leave this appointment with a temporary bridge in place while your permanent one is being crafted by our trusted Australian dental laboratory.

    Visit 2: Fitting and Bonding

A few weeks later, your permanent bridge is ready. Dr Gilbert checks the fit, the colour match, and most importantly, your bite. Once everything is correct, the bridge is permanently cemented into place. You can eat normally immediately.

The entire process is typically completed in two appointments over three to four weeks.

Bridge or implant which is right for you?

Both are excellent solutions for a missing tooth. The right choice depends on your specific situation.

A bridge is faster and less invasive. An implant preserves the jaw bone and does not require shaping the adjacent teeth. For many patients, a bridge is the right choice now, with an implant considered if the bridge ever needs replacing in the future.

Dr Gilbert will walk you through both options at your assessment and give you a clear recommendation based on your specific teeth, bone, and budget.

Why choose Westlake Dental for your bridge?

A dental bridge that is not designed correctly for your bite will fail early. If the bridge sits even slightly too high, it takes the full force of your jaw every time you close your mouth. Over time, the porcelain chips, the cement seal breaks, and the anchor teeth underneath begin to decay.

Dr Gilbert's Kois Centre training in occlusion and bite biomechanics means every bridge we place is designed to distribute chewing forces evenly across your entire jaw. This is the difference between a bridge that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 15.

With decades of restorative experience and a meticulous approach to every case, you can be confident that your bridge is built to last.

    Common Questions About Dental Bridges

Every month without a tooth, the surrounding teeth shift a little further.

The gap left by a missing tooth does not stay stable. The longer it is left, the more the surrounding teeth drift and the more complex the eventual solution becomes. A bridge placed now is simpler, faster, and less expensive than one placed after years of shifting.
