Wisdom Teeth Removal in Westlake — Safe, Precise, and Stress-Free

Impacted or painful wisdom teeth do not have to take over your life. Dr Gilbert uses 3D imaging to assess every case precisely, so you know exactly what is involved before any extraction begins.

Wisdom tooth pain does not get better by itself.

For most people, wisdom teeth start causing problems between the ages of 17 and 25. The jaw simply does not have enough room for them, so they push sideways, get stuck under the gum, or only partially emerge.

When a wisdom tooth is impacted or partially erupted, it creates a pocket between the tooth and the gum that is impossible to clean properly. Bacteria accumulate in that pocket, causing repeated infections, swelling, and pain that can radiate through the jaw and into the ear.

Ignoring an impacted wisdom tooth does not make the problem go away. It means more infections, more antibiotics, and eventually an extraction that is more complex than it needed to be.

Not all wisdom teeth need to come out. We will tell you honestly.

At Westlake Dental, we do not recommend wisdom tooth extraction unless it is genuinely necessary. If your wisdom teeth have come through straight, there is enough room in your jaw, and you can clean them properly, they can stay.

But if they are impacted, causing repeated infections, damaging the tooth next to them, or creating crowding, removal is the right call. The sooner it is done, the simpler the procedure. Wisdom teeth with shorter, less developed roots are significantly easier to extract than those that have been left for years.

We will assess your specific situation with 3D OPG imaging and give you an honest recommendation. No unnecessary procedures. No pressure.

    Wisdom Teeth Removal

How do you know if your wisdom teeth are a problem?

You may need wisdom teeth removal if you are experiencing:

Recurring pain or swelling at the back of your jaw that comes and goes. This is a classic sign of pericoronitis, an infection of the gum tissue around a partially erupted wisdom tooth.

Difficulty opening your mouth fully, particularly after a bout of swelling. This indicates the infection has spread to the surrounding muscles.

Pain in the adjacent tooth (the second molar). An impacted wisdom tooth pushes directly against the tooth in front of it, causing damage to the root that is often invisible until it is severe.

A bad taste or smell at the back of your mouth that does not go away with brushing. This is a sign of a persistent bacterial infection in the gum pocket.

Visible crowding of your front teeth. While not always caused by wisdom teeth, erupting wisdom teeth can contribute to shifting in the lower front teeth.

What to expect when having a wisdom tooth removed.

    1

    Assessment and Imaging

Before any extraction, we take a 3D OPG X-ray that shows the full position of the wisdom tooth, the angle of the roots, and the proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve. This is the most important step. It allows Dr Gilbert to plan the extraction precisely and advise you accurately on what to expect.

    2

    Anaesthetic

The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic. You will feel pressure during the extraction, but not pain. For patients with significant anxiety, we can discuss sedation options at your assessment.

    3

    Extraction

Depending on the position of the tooth, the extraction may be straightforward or may require a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. Dr Gilbert will explain exactly what is involved for your specific case before proceeding.

    4

    Recovery

Most patients recover comfortably within three to five days. We provide clear written aftercare instructions, and Shaleen will follow up to make sure your recovery is progressing well.

Why choose Westlake Dental for your wisdom teeth removal?

Wisdom tooth extractions vary enormously in complexity. A straightforward erupted wisdom tooth is very different from a deeply impacted tooth with curved roots sitting close to a nerve. The difference in outcome comes down to the quality of the pre-operative assessment.

Dr Gilbert has been assessing and extracting wisdom teeth for over 35 years. He uses 3D CBCT imaging as standard for all complex cases, which means the position of every root and the proximity to every nerve is mapped before the procedure begins. There are no surprises mid-extraction.

For cases that are beyond the scope of a general dental practice, Dr Gilbert will refer you to an oral surgeon and brief them directly. We will never attempt a procedure that is not in your best interest.
