Dental Crowns in Westlake Rebuild and Protect Your Weakest Teeth

When a filling is no longer enough to hold a tooth together, a custom porcelain crown provides the strength you need to eat, speak, and smile without fear of it breaking.

A cracked or heavily filled tooth is a ticking time bomb.

Teeth are incredibly strong, but they are not indestructible. Over time, large fillings, deep decay, or teeth grinding can weaken the remaining natural tooth structure.

When a tooth is structurally compromised, a standard filling acts like a wedge. Every time you bite down, the filling pushes outward against the weakened walls of the tooth. Eventually, one of those walls will crack.

If the crack is shallow, it hurts. If the crack goes below the gum line, the tooth cannot be saved. It must be extracted and replaced with a dental implant, which costs significantly more and takes months to complete.

The goal is to protect the tooth before that crack happens.

The ultimate protection for a damaged tooth.

A dental crown acts like a protective helmet for your tooth. Instead of sitting inside the tooth like a filling, it encases the entire visible portion of the tooth right down to the gum line.

    This does two things:

    1. It holds the tooth together, absorbing the heavy forces of chewing so the natural tooth underneath does not fracture.
    2. It restores the exact shape, size, and colour of your original tooth, blending seamlessly with your smile.

At Westlake Dental, we do not use cheap, mass-produced crowns. We use high-strength, lifelike porcelain and ceramic materials. More importantly, Dr Gilbert's advanced Kois Centre training means your crown is engineered to match your specific bite biomechanics. It will not just look good. It is designed to last.

Signs your tooth might need a crown, not just a filling.

You may need a dental crown if you have:

    A very large filling

When the filling takes up more than half the tooth, there is not enough natural enamel left to support it. Every bite is now putting pressure on a structurally compromised shell.

    A cracked or fractured tooth

A crack that is not contained will spread. A crown holds the tooth together and stops the fracture from reaching the root, where it becomes irreparable.

    Had a root canal

Root canal therapy saves the tooth but removes the internal structure that keeps it hydrated and flexible. Without a crown, a root-canal-treated tooth is highly likely to shatter under normal chewing forces.

    Severe wear from grinding

Years of grinding can wear teeth down to flat, sensitive stumps. A crown rebuilds the height and shape of the tooth and, combined with a night guard, stops the damage from continuing.

    A broken cusp

When a corner of a back chewing tooth breaks off, the remaining tooth is uneven and vulnerable. A crown restores the full shape and prevents further breakage.

What to expect when getting a crown.

Getting a crown is a straightforward, predictable process that usually takes two visits.

    Visit 1: Preparation and Impression

We gently shape the damaged tooth to make room for the crown. We then take a highly accurate digital or physical impression of the prepared tooth. You will leave this appointment with a temporary crown protecting your tooth while your permanent one is being crafted by our trusted Australian dental laboratory.

    Visit 2: Fitting and Bonding

A few weeks later, you return to have your permanent crown fitted. Dr Gilbert will check the fit, the colour match, and most importantly, your bite. Once everything is perfect, the crown is permanently bonded into place. You can eat and chew on it immediately.

Why choose Westlake Dental for your crown?

A crown is a significant investment in your health. It needs to be done right the first time.

Dr Gilbert has been designing and fitting crowns for decades. The difference between a crown that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 15 years usually comes down to the bite. If a crown is even a fraction of a millimetre too high, it takes the full force of your jaw every time you close your mouth. Eventually, it will fail.

Because of our Kois Centre training, we do not just look at the single tooth. We look at how that tooth interacts with the rest of your jaw. We design your crown to sit in perfect harmony with your natural bite, drastically reducing the risk of premature failure or jaw pain.

    Common Questions About Dental Crowns

Do not wait for the tooth to shatter.

A weak tooth does not give you a warning before it breaks. Once it cracks below the gum line, a crown is no longer an option. The tooth must come out.
