Root Canal Treatment in Westlake Stop the Pain and Save Your Tooth

A root canal does not cause pain. It ends it. Dr Gilbert has been performing gentle, precise root canal therapy for decades, helping patients across Brisbane's western suburbs keep their natural teeth instead of losing them to infection.

That deep, throbbing toothache is not going to go away on its own.

If you have a severe, constant toothache, pain that wakes you up at night, or a tooth that is acutely sensitive to heat, you are likely dealing with an infected tooth nerve.

Dental infections do not resolve without treatment. The bacteria causing the infection will continue to spread through the root canal system, into the surrounding bone, and eventually into the jaw and soft tissue. Left long enough, a dental abscess can become a serious medical emergency requiring hospital treatment.

The pain you are feeling right now is your body telling you the window to save the tooth is closing.

Root canals do not hurt. Infected teeth do.

The fear of root canal treatment is one of the most persistent myths in dentistry, and it is costing people their teeth.

The pain patients associate with root canals is not caused by the procedure. It is caused by the infection that made the root canal necessary in the first place. By the time Dr Gilbert begins the treatment, the tooth is already under local anaesthetic. The infected nerve is numb. The procedure itself feels no different to getting a standard filling.

What a root canal actually does is remove the source of the pain, clean and disinfect the canal, and seal the tooth so the infection cannot return. Most patients leave the appointment feeling significantly better than when they arrived.

Saving your tooth is always our first priority.

At Westlake Dental, we treat root canal therapy as a tooth-saving procedure, not a last resort. A natural tooth, even one that has had a root canal, is always preferable to an artificial replacement. It functions better, feels more natural, and is far more cost-effective over the long term.

Dr Gilbert uses advanced rotary instrumentation and precise 3D imaging to ensure the entire canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This is not a procedure where shortcuts are acceptable. A root canal done properly the first time means you keep the tooth for life. A root canal done poorly means you are back in the chair within a few years.

What actually happens during a root canal.

    1

    Anaesthetic

The area around the tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic before anything begins. You will feel pressure, but not pain.

    2

    Access and Cleaning

A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp chamber. The infected nerve tissue and bacteria are carefully removed using fine rotary instruments. The entire canal system is flushed and disinfected.

    3

    Sealing

Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent reinfection.

    4

    Crown Placement

In most cases, a tooth that has had a root canal will need a crown to protect it from fracturing. Root canal treatment removes the internal structure that keeps the tooth hydrated and flexible, making it more brittle. A crown is placed at a separate appointment to restore the full strength of the tooth.

The entire root canal procedure is typically completed in one to two appointments, depending on the complexity of the infection.

Why choose Dr Gilbert for your root canal?

Root canal therapy is a precision procedure. The canal system inside a tooth is complex, curved, and sometimes has multiple branches that are invisible to the naked eye. Missing even a small section of infected tissue is enough to cause the procedure to fail.

Dr Gilbert has been performing root canal treatments for decades. He uses 3D CBCT imaging to map the full anatomy of the root system before beginning treatment, removing the guesswork that leads to incomplete procedures and reinfection.

His Kois Centre training also means that the crown placed after the root canal is designed to handle your specific bite forces, giving the restored tooth the best possible chance of lasting for decades.

If you have a severe toothache, do not wait. Dental infections move quickly and the longer you leave it, the more complex and costly the treatment becomes.

Common Questions About Root Canal Treatment

Every day you wait, the infection spreads further.

A dental infection will not resolve on its own. Antibiotics can reduce the swelling temporarily, but they cannot eliminate the source of the infection inside the tooth. The only way to stop it is to treat the root canal.

The sooner you act, the better the outcome and the lower the cost. Call us now or book online and we will get you seen as quickly as possible.
